The city of Barcelona will welcome the Pope in November when he will consecrate the Temple of the Sagrada Familia Expiatori. He will arrive from Santiago de Compostela on the evening on the 6th, his visit there coinciding with Santiago de Compostela Holy Year.

Traveling south, Pope Benedict will preside over the consecration of Barcelona’s emblematic La Sagrada Familia on the 7th. The cathedral which has been under construction since 1882 is expected to be completed by 2025 and its architect Antoni Gaudi, he himself a devout Catholic is often referred to as “God’s architect.”

The November trip will be Benedict XVI’s second to Spain, after the 2006 World Meeting of Families he attended in Valencia. The aim of the visit is to highlight the importance of family and marriage in our lives.

With a capacity of 7,500- 8,000 people inside the church and about 500,000 others expected to watch the ceremony from screens planted outside in the open squares, a very special atmosphere is bound to be created in the city with the Pope´s presence.
