Carnival Barcelona

Carnival Barcelona

Carnival Barcelona

Every year in February, timed just before the Lenten fast, Barcelona celebrates with a carnival themed on food and drink that dates back hundreds of years.  Under the rule of the dictator, Franco, the carnival was banned between 1936 and 1980 but today is considered by locals to be one of the most important celebrations of the year.

The festivities begin on ‘Fat Thursday’ when the streets of Barcelona are filled with local markets, food stalls and dancing. Most activities throughout the city are organised locally by neighbourhoods and are advertised on posters. The most popular activities include short parades, competitions and loads of fun action for the children. Among the activities there is always a celebration of the traditions of eating eggs, usually in the form of tortilla (omelette) cooking competitions as well as sardine tasting events. It a tradition in Barcelona that the best decorated stalls and shops in each neighbourhood are awarded a prize for all their hard, creative work.

Also on Fat Thursday, the ‘carnival king’ arrives. The symbolic role of the king is to take responsibility for the sins that have occurred in the city throughout the year. On the closing day of the carnival, the will of the King is read aloud before he is burnt and honoured all over the city.

The highlight of Carnival Barcelona is the big parade – ‘La Grand Rua de Carnaval’. More than 2000 people take part in the parade and visitors flock the side-streets to catch a glimpse of the colourful floats, wonderful costumes, and energetic dancing groups. This year, it begins at Paral-lel Avenue in Sants neighbourhood, on March 5th.

Carnival Barcelona usually ends on Ash Wednesday and is celebrated with a traditional event – ‘Enterrament de la Sardinia’. This literally means ‘burying the sardine’, and that is exactly what is done.

If you’re looking to visit Barcelona during the carnival season, it’s recommended to book transport and accommodation well ahead of time. Event schedules can be found on the local tourist board website. All that’s left to do is to dress up and join in the fun!
