In this first article, we will talk about a popular dance called “Lindy hop”. It comes from the EEUU and is gaining followers with quite a lot of speed. Every first and third Sunday of the month, the lovers of the “Lindy hop” have an appointment in the “Parc de la Ciutadella”, at 6pm. Also every Sunday at 12pm, they can meet in the “Plaza de la Virreina”, and every third Sunday of the month, there is a concert in the “Apolo” theatre, with the Big Band.

Even thought you are not very into dancing in front of unknown viewers, attending one of these meetings will give you the chance to meet new people and have a completely different time. You just have to walk down Las Ramblas, pass by the Colom monument and reach the wood walking platform above the sea, that will let you arrive to the building. You can sit down on the floor with the legs hanged above the water, or in one of the seats distributed all along the platforms. Before traveling to Spain, you should know that Spanish is not the only one living in the country. Instead, there are several languages, dialects and variations living together in specific territories.

This is the case of Catalonia, where there are two official languages: Spanish and Catalan. At the same time, neither the way to talk Catalan remains the same in

the whole Catalonia, and sometimes the dialects become so unique that seem completely different to each other.

reciate when foreign people talk to them in their own language, as for lots of them, it is their only mother tongue.

When we are lost and need to stop someone to ask for some advice about directions, for example, we would say “perdoni”, the Catalan equivalent to the English ex

cuse me.  “Em podria dir com anar a…” will tell in Catalan, could you tell how to get to…. Once they give you the answer, be aware of these words: “dreta” (right) “esquerra” (left) and “recta” (straight).

Before leaving that person, and if you are polite, you should say “gràcies”, as thank you, and “adéu”, as good bye.

Two other words you should know to talk to a Catalan are “hola”, hello and “de res”, you are welcome.

Spanish and Catalan aren’t much different but for those who have learned Spanish at school as a second or third language, will be almost impossible to understand a word in Catalan.

Maybe you have never seen the Madrid’s symbol but if you are about to travel to this city, you will have the feeling that you see it everywhere.

As you will find out, it is a very beautiful picture, composed by a bear supported in a tree and framed by seven stars.

The history of this symbol starts during the Middle Ages, where the surrounding fields of Madrid were said to be full of bears. From then on, this animal began to be linked to the city until becoming its main representative.

At the beginning, the bear appeared on grass, but around the 1222, this element changed into an arbutus, one kind of tree.

Some people say that the seven stars refer to the Madrid’s sky but others have the opinion that they come from the Ursa Minor constellation. This second hypothesis could be reasonable if we keep thinking in the bear role, both as the animal and the sky figure.

The Madrid’s City Hall started to plant several arbutus through the city, as this kind of tree wasn’t much extended in the location, but it was a beautiful desire to achieve a Madrid’s full of them.

“El Escorial” is a great and huge monastery build in the XVI century as a desire of the King Felip II. You can easily get to “El Escorial” from Madrid by train, renting a car or by taxi, and it takes slightly more than an hour. Once there, you have to walk for some minutes up to a long pass limited by high trees that help to protect you from the sun and create a picturesque postcard.

It is a huge place magically decorated with American idols and items where you can eat delicious hamburgers, chips, and other delicatessens from this international cuisine.
