Finland will be the guest of honour in the 33rd ARCOmadrid, to be held from 19 to 23 February 2014, in halls 5 and 7 of Feria de Madrid.
After holding meetings with the galleries, we have made changes for the next edition, so it is better suited to their needs. A new edition for which we will once again work to give maximum visibility to the work of the artists and to enhance exchanges between galleries, professionals and collectors. A selection of galleries chosen by Leevi Haapala, curator of the Kiasma Museum in Helsinki, will bring Finland’s contemporary artistic production to Madrid.
ARCOmadrid is the most important contemporary art fair in Spain with 217 galleries, 163 of them on the general programme. The 2014 ARCO features a number of galleries from France and Finland, the latter being the guest of honour at the 33rd annual fair.
The artists are the stars of this year’s event, as over 60 of the participating galleries will be presenting one or two of them as part of the new initiative for the General Programme: SOLO/DUO, plus 13 more in #FocusFinland, 27 in #Opening and another 21 in #SoloProjects. ARCOMADRID 2014 thus puts the spotlight on the artists.
ARCOmadrid returns, for the 33rd year, with its usual momentum and audacity when it comes to tracking the latest trends in contemporary art. As one of the most important events of its kind, it brings together the most innovative artists and art specialists from around the globe.
The fair gauges the latest trends on the international art scene, drawing over 150,000 visitors from dozens of countries each year. For four days, it makes Madrid the center of attention for artists, gallerists, curators and collectors. The #FocusFinland programme will be coordinated by Frame Visual Art Finland and will be partnered by Team Finland: the Finnish Embassy in Spain, the Ibero-American Institute of Finland and the Finnish Trade Office (Finpro). After an analysis of the different international art scenes and the joint study by the fair’s organising committee and IFEMA management, #FocusFinland has become one of the central programmes of the next fair, adding to the other sections of ARCOmadrid 2014 – the General Programme, #SoloProjects and #Opening.
One of the main aims in choosing Finland as guest of honour, apart from forming closer links between the institutions and galleries of both countries and other contemporary art agents, was to create more awareness of Finnish art in Spain and Latin America, as well as attracting a new Nordic audience to ARCOmadrid.
