Differences Between American & Spanish Dining

WATER / AGUA
In America it’s very common that once you are seated at a restaurant you are automatically served a glass of water. While in Barcelona that is most definitely not the case, unless you’re at a “hipster” or American restaurant, but it is still very rare. This often surprises many Americans as they are accustomed to receiving unlimited water and free of cost. In Barcelona you have to pay for water like any other beverages such as soda, juice or wine.
NO TIPPING / NO PROPINA
After you finish your meal at a restaurant it comes time for the check. You look it over and pay the exact amount. No more. No less. What about the tip? It’s not necessary here in Europe to tip waiters or bartenders. In fact, to some people it can be very insulting because it’s insinuating that they do not make enough money to make a living. So use that extra money and buy another drink!
THE CHECK / LA CUENTA
You have to ask for your check at a restaurant otherwise you will never leave. Sometimes you might have to ask more than once. A waiter will never just bring the check over because it is seen as rude. They do not rush people to leave after they finish their meal like many restaurants in America. It’s a time to enjoy and relax, but if you are in a hurry to leave ask for the check once your meal arrives to ensure you don’t have to wait around for another 20 minutes.
