The Costa del Maresme is a part of the coastline just north of Barcelona, before the famous Costa Brava. From Barcelona it is easily accessible by train. Our favourite part of this stretch of coast lies between the towns of Sant Pol de Mar and Calella.
Sant Pol de Mar is a small town. It has a main street with a handful of shops and bars and a few old streets around the church. It’s nice enough for a short visit but after that we like to head out of the village, into the direction of Calella, the next town along the coast, since our favourite thing about going here is not the towns so much as the actual walk between the towns. It’s a walk of about 3 kilometres and there is a path for pedestrians along the road. And the views from this path are absolutely stunning. Every time we do this little hike, I am amazed by the deep blue and turquoise colours of the mediterranean, the intense green of the pine trees, the small bright yellow flowers and the gorgeous, rough and wild looking, rocky coastline. Far below the road are small beaches dotted along and there are a few points where you can take stairs down to reach those. Up high on the rocks a small white lighthouse overlooks the sea. A little reminder of how fishing was a main source of income here before tourism became big in the 1960s.
The town of Calella is noticeably bigger and busier than Sant Pol de Mar. It’s a very popular spot for tourists from both Spain and the rest of the world. Calella’s beach is long, wide and sandy. Quite different from the small beaches between the rocks just before Calella, but also a very pleasant place to spend some time. If you are hungry and thirsty after the walk, you won’t have any trouble in Calella. There are plenty of places to quench your thirst and fill your belly.
When you are ready to return to Barcelona, you can easily take the train back from Calella, straight to one of the stations in the city.
So if you have enough time and you feel like getting out of the city, the Costa del Maresme might be the perfect place to visit. Not only is it nice to spend some time on a slightly quieter beach, it’s also a nice way of seeing some more of the surroundings of Barcelona. And even the train ride itself is a pleasure, boasting beautiful views over the sea on one side and cute little towns on the other side!
