The Prado Museum in Madrid

If you have decided to visit Spain, with its bright colors, its passionate music and its people funny and friendly, you can’t miss Madrid, the real capital of Spain’s soul. And one of the place which holds the essence of Spain is certainly the Prado Museum.

Prado Museum Madrid

The Prado Museum in Madrid ranks right up there with Paris’s Louvre, Florence’ s Uffizzi or Vatican Museums for the quality, breadth and renown of its collection. Just over 3,000 of the paintings in the Prado’s possession were commissioned by Spanish royalty, but the collection totals over 8,500. The building is enormous by most measures – visitors tend to be overwhelmed by the size – yet it is only capable of holding about 14% of the museum’s stock. Renovations are underway to enlarge the building and find a home for thousands of stowed away masterpieces.
The permanent collection is divided into 8 main categories on 2 floors: Spanish painting (1100-1850), Italian painting (1300-1800), Flemish painting (1430-1700), French painting (1600-1800), German painting (1450-1800), sculpture, decorative arts and drawings & prints.

The building that today houses the Museo Nacional del Prado was designed by architect Juan de Villanueva in 1785. The Museo Nacional del Prado, opened to the public for the first time in November 1819. The Museum’s first catalogue, published in 1819, included 311 paintings, although at that time its collection comprised just over 1,510 pictures from the various Reales Sitios (Royal Residences). The exceptionally important royal collection, which represents the foundation of the Museum’s collection as we know it today, started to increase significantly in the 16th century during the time of Charles V and continued to thrive under the succeeding Habsburg and Bourbon Monarchs. It is down to them than nowadays we can contemplate in the Museum as greatest masterpieces as The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosh, The Nobleman with his hand on his Chest by El Greco, Death of the Virgin by Mantegna, The Holy Family known as The Pearl by Raphael, Emperor Carlos V on Horseback by Titian, The Foot Washing by Tintoretto, Self-portrait by Durër , Las Meninas by Velázquez, The Three Graces by Rubens, and The Family of Carlos IV by Goya. Pentecost Monday in Barceloneta

Pentecost is celebrated seven weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday, hence its name. Pentecost falls on the tenth day after Ascension Thursday.

Barceloneta Pentecost

Among Christians, Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Twelve Apostles and other followers of Jesus. For this reason, Pentecost is sometimes described by some Christians today as the “Birthday of the Church.”
In Christian tradition Pentecost is part of the Moveable Cycle of the ecclesiastical year. According to Christian tradition, Pentecost is always seven weeks after Easter Sunday; that is to say, 50 days after Easter (inclusive of Easter Day). In other words, it falls on the eighth Sunday, counting Easter Day.
In the West, the earliest possible date is May 10 (as in 1818 and 2285), and the latest possible date June 13 (as in 1943 and 2038). Pentecost Monday is a public holiday in many European countries including Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania (since 2008), (most parts of) Switzerland, Ukraine and also in the African nations Senegal, Benin and Togo.
In the United Kingdom the day is known as Whit Monday, and was a bank holiday until 1967 when it was replaced by the Spring Bank Holiday.

In Spain it’s not a public holiday, but yes it is in Barcelona. Particulary in the Barceloneta quarter and this year will be Monday, May 20.

In Barcelona Pentecost is also called the Second Pasqua or Pasqua Granada, but in particular, in the Barceloneta is known as the Salseta. 27 bars and restaurants of the historic fishing district of the city, organize choirs and big bands with drums and trumpets, wich continually runs the narrow streets of the neighborhood all day long and untill late night, playing and dancing on the street.
