After than the Barcelona Marathon and the Corte Inglés Race, Barcelona has a new run on its streets. On May 26, the Avenida Diagonal, the most exclusive street in the city, will be filled with runners taking part in the first race organized by the police of Barcelona. Hundreds of people will run for the first time on the most prestigious street of the city.

Diagonal Barcelona

The race measure 10 kilometers, a distance approved by the Catalan Athletics Federation, with the goal to promote the practice of physical exercise. This is the first time in wich people can run down the center of the Diagonal. The race will begin at 8:30 pm on Sunday May 26 at Avenida Diagonal, at the height of the Royal Palace and will run throughout the centre of the street until reaching the Selva de Mar Street, in the Diagonal Mar District, next to Rent Top Apartments‘ s head office.

The race is unique in Barcelona, because it is the first time that people will be able tu run throughout all the Diagonal and the track has the distinction of being completely straight up to the Forum. So the arrival and departure points of the race will be differents, with a logistics structure that will allow the participants to collect their belongings as soon as they’ll reach the goal.

Registrations are now open on the website of the race www.dir.cat/cursa-barcelona with a price of 15 euros or 17. The April Fair of Catalonia, (Feria de abril de Cataluña), is an annual event held in Barcelona. It usually takes place over the last week of April and the first week of May. It’s one of the main event of the Spring in Barcelona. The 2013 edition of the Feria de Abril de Cataluña will be from from Friday 26th Abril to Sunday 5th May 2013.

Holiday in Spain

In 1971, immigrants to Barcelona from Andalusia, and their descendants, began their own version of the worldwide known Seville Fair, Feria de abril de Sevilla. Since then the Barcelona event has grown to become the second largest Spring Fair in Spain.
The fair is currently held at the Parc del Fòrum fairgrounds, in the Diagonal Mar district of Barcelona, a large area on the shores of the Mediterranean, which is covered with rows of casetas, colorfully decorated marquee tents which are temporarily set up. Most of the casetas are sponsored by cultural associations created by and for Andalusian immigrants and their descendants. There are also casetas sponsored by the cultural associations of other ethnic groups, such as Latin Americans and Moroccans, as well as others sponsored by political parties.
A major difference between the Barcelona and Seville events is that the casetas in Barcelona are completely open to the public. In the casetas, food and drink are served, people either dance on dance floors, or are entertained by musical performances, usually by flamenco dancers and singers.
Throughout the fairground, many men, women and children walk around dressed in traditional “trajes de corto” (short jacket, tight trousers and boots) and “trajes de flamenco” (flamenco style dresses).
The main sponsoring organization is FECAC, the Federation of Andalusian Cultural Groups in Catalonia, or Federación de Entidades Culturales Andaluzas en Cataluña.
The Feria de Abril of Barcelona takes place in a set of about 70 casetas, mainly devoted to leisure, dance, and restoration. Inspired by its Andalusian origin and customs of the South of Spain, in the April Fair of Seville and Barcelona flamenco and sevillana are the music that dominates the event. You can also meet other andalusian elements, as are traditional costumes, food and drinks as rebujito or “pescaíto” fried.
The area is divided into two parts, which occupy a total area of more than 10 hectáreas. The main part, the “Real” is the set of the casetas.
Another sector of the enclosure is called “Calle del Infierno”. It is dedicated to fairground rides, raffles and other entertainment.

BarSWINGona festival was created by Carmen & Lluís on may 1998 and has been run by the barSWINGona team which has been continuously renovated. BarSWINGona main party dates are March 28th, 29th, 30th & 31th at the fabulous Casino de l’Aliança del Poblenou, that will be the major dance hall of the BarSWINGona’13.

Since the beginning, BarSWINGona purpose has been to allow dancers from everywhere share the passion for swing dancing and music with people from Barcelona and the rest of the world.
BarSWINGona is a not-for-profit event although the budget has been consistently increasing every year. Some years the festival did quite well whereas some others it did not and needed some private support to survive. BarSWINGona is struggling to get public support and private sponsors as well with just minor successes so far.

All levels, but the beginners one, will get all the Lindy hop Masters. Each couple of teachers will develop the steps in their own personal style. Barcelona is a puzzle of little villages, each piece is a district. Barceloneta is one of these piece. One of the most fascinating and one of the least known, at least with respect to the area beyond the beach and the restaurants touting for trade on Passeig de Joan de Borbó.

La Barceloneta was constructed during the 18th century for the residents of the Ribera neighborhood who had been displaced by the construction of the Ciudadela of Barcelona, where now there’s a park. The neighborhood is roughly triangular, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. La Barceloneta‘s beach gained notoriety as “the best urban beach in the world” and overall “third best beach in the world”, according 2005 Travel Channel show Worlds Best Beaches.
La Barceloneta is known for its sandy beach and its many restaurants and nightclubs along the boardwalk. Amongst the attractions on Barceloneta‘s beach are German artist Rebecca Horn’s “Homenatge a la Barceloneta” monument, and, where the beach gives way to the Port Olimpic, Frank Gehry’s modern “Peix d’Or” sculpture.

But inside the neighborhood there are many little treasures and an authentic atmosphere, made up of fishermen and port workers, which it’s difficult to breathe in others parts of the city.
Negra y Criminal, a book shop specializing in crime and Noir novels, is one of that treasures. Building on the inter¬national popularity of local crime writers such as Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, they organize the annual BCNegra festival taking place this year from February 1st through 9th, bringing international authors to Barcelona to celebrate the genre. Fans of the dark and grisly are well catered for here, and if a crime author isn’t available in this shop, they’re probably not worth reading. The owners are knowledgeable and passionate, and it’s everything a good bookstore should be. Every Saturday morning they offer fresh mussels and white wine to visitors.

‘Semana Santa‘ translates as Holy Week. Barcelona, as part of Catalonia, is traditionally less religious than other parts of Spain, particularly in the South. However, it still has its fair share of celebrations during the period of the Easter holiday. In Barcelona the most famous procession is “La Burreta” and takes place in la Ciutat Vella on Palm Sunday. Other processions are centering in the Gótico, around the cathedral and Las Ramblas during the week.
The Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, on March 24, when a procession traditionally takes place around the cathedral with people holding palms. A week of religious ceremonies follows, ending on Easter Sunday, on March 31.
For the Easter period there are many occasions and holidays that are celebrated – a great excuse for a trip to Barcelona. Most of the feast dates in this period are moveable, as they are celebrated on a certain day of the week – Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Easter Sunday etc. In 2013, the Holy Week runs from March 24 to April 1. Barcelona looks beautiful during this period. The sun is beginning to return to the city, as Spring has sprung, the trees are in blossom and there are many outdoor processions and celebrations taking place.
