International Comic Fair of Barcelona

The 31st edition of the International Comic Fair of Barcelona will take place in Hall 8 of Fira Barcelona Montjuïc from 11 until 14 April. The show will be open from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm and the access will be by Avenida Reina María Cristina, Plaza de España. The venue of the event will feature some 19,000 m2.

The initial list of confirmed foreign guests included renowned authors like the French Manu Larcenet, the Italian Lorena Canottiere, responsible for the graphic novel Little People, Liniers, considered one of the best exponents of the new Argentine humor. This list also includes the Canadian Guy Delisle, author of the award-winning graphic novels Shenzhen, Pyongyang and Chronicles of Jerusalem.

This year one of the themes of the International Comic Fair of Barcelona is the Western genre in comics. ‘A fistful of comics’ is the title of an exhibition that’ll show some of the classics Western scenarios in comics, where cowboys, soldiers, Indians, outlaws and vigilantes live great adventures.
The International Comic Fair of Barcelona will host over a hundred pages of original comics and illustrations by authors of different nationalities. There will be an anthologic exhibition for the 75th anniversary of Superman, the popular character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and Friends Forever: The X-Men and the Avengers, two series created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby that meet its 50th anniversary this year.

The 31st edition of the International Comic Fair of Barcelona is organized by FICOMIC will feature the participation of renowned national and interncionales cartoonists and numerous cultural and recreational activities such as exhibitions, conferences, workshops or author signatures. The El Corte Inglés Race held its first edition in 1979, with the participation of 17,184 people, of which approximately 85% were amateur participants. In 1994 the participation was of 109,457 people, a number that still remains unbeaten today, setting a Guinness record still unsurpassed. In its latest edition, the El Corte Inglés Race was attended by 54,795 people. In total there were 1,724,078 people who have run the race over its 30 year history.

Sónar by Day 2013, new venue

After 19 years at the CCCB, the MACBA and the surrounding area, the Sonar festival is moving its daytime headquarters to the Fira Montjuïc area in Plaça d’Espanya, an emblematic location in the city.

The new location will breathe new life into Sónar by Day, with extensive spaces that will facilitate optimal movement by those attending and the professionals participating. Sónar by Day keeps its 4 stages (SonarVillage by Estrella Damm, SonarHall, SonarDôme and SonarComplex), all of which have increased capacities in their new locations. The new Sónar by Day is significantly nearer Sónar by Night, which is still at its usual venue in the Fira Gran Via area in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and consolidates its four-stage format, (SonarClub, SonarLab, SonarPub and SonarCar, located next to the bumper cars). With the festival’s shuttle buses, the two sites are now only 10 minutes apart.

Sonar 2013 will be held from 13 to 15 June. Te line-up it’s not colosed but yet includes the performance of two great references as Kraftwerk, presenting a 3D technology show, and Pet Shop Boys.
And then Two Door Cinema Club, Diplo, Skrillex and Major Lazer, among others.
And for those who go to the festival for dance, Sonar 2013 offers the outstanding performance by Paul Kalkbrenner, Maceo Plex and a long list of high-level DJs.
And after twenty years, Sonar has also invited artists who have participated to the festival since the beginning. This is the case of Laurent Garnier, who acted in the first edition, or Matthew Herbert Modeselektor.

This year’s edition will be dedicated to Japan and it will feature more than 120 tattoo artists representing 20 countries. The organizers hope to surpass last year’s attendance and remain a leading international event not only for the world of tattoos, but also for all those currents and expressions who have in street art thier inspiration.

Rethinking Cities 2012 in Barcelona

The 6th Urban Research and Knowledge Symposium (URKS6) on Rethinking Cities: Framing the Future will be held in Barcelona from October 8 to 10, 2012. The Rethinking Cities conference venue is the Barcelona Congress Center, at the Fira de Barcelona, Avda. Reina Maria Cristina, very close to the Plaza España and the hill of Montjuïc. The Symposium seeks to contribute and inform policy choices that can help policymakers manage potential economic efficiency, environmental sustainability and social equity tradeoffs associated with urbanization.

The Symposium is being organized by The World Bank in partnership with the City of Barcelona and some key partners, and provides a global forum for urban stakeholders and all who are interested in cities to discuss and exchange knowledge on urban matters of how to make policy choices under resource constraints and uncertainty today that will minimize lock-in and path dependency at later stages of urban development. Located in the city center of Barcelona, near to the Liceu Theatre and the Rambla del Raval, the Film Library of Catalonia (Filmoteca) is a new building, opened in February 2012, with open spaces for the public and a great movies offer. The new building contains two cinema halls with 360 and 184 seats, an exhibition hall, a library of 1,800 m2, a bookstore specializated in cinema and a café open from Tuesday to Sunday.

The building has six floors and 7,000 m2, is a project by Josep Lluís Mateo that integrates perfectly into the landscape. The new Filmoteca remodels a public agora into the into the Raval streets labyrinth. Despite its size, the building does not exceed the height of the surrounding blocks, and its visual impact is moderated by its compact volume. The Filmoteca is a bright and modern building located in the heart of a very dynamic and changing district.

The Filmoteca of Catalonia is preparing a September full of good cinema, including projections, cycles and tributes. There will be a review dedicated to the Catalan writer, Eduardo Mendoza, which includes five films based on his novels.

Summer is going to end, even if September is still an amazing month to spend in Barcelona. The sun and the sea are still there and even the art. From Friday 13 July to 22 September 2012 the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) expands its regular hours and is open Friday and Saturday until 10 pm. Visitors can enjoy during the summer months of the five exhibitions that the Museum currently offers a special evening hours.

There are a series of initiatives and activities during the special hours (8 to 10 pm) the purchase price of the entry gives the Passi, a card to visit the MACBA for a whole year for free. The ticket includes a series of guided tours to exhibitions, led by a game of chance. Also, the terrace on the first floor of the museum will be open, and visitors and provide a quiet space with a privileged view to the square of the Angels.

The Magic Fountain of Montjüic

On the Montjüic Hill, on the Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina there is the Magic Fountain. The fountain, 12 meters in diameter, was designed by the engineer Carles Buigas for the Universal Exhibition of 1929 and offers an incredible and unique show of water colors and music.

The show (totally free) of the “Fuente Magica” offers 13 different choreographies with music ranging from classical symphonies, remix, modern songs, medleys 70s and 80s. During the hot catalan summer many people gather around the fountain, as well picking up a few drops of water to help them beat the heat.
As each summer, the Magic Fountain celebrates the sunset with the rhythm of light, color and music. This summer all the audience that gathers around the fountain will dance to the rhythm of rock and pop by international bands.
The grat news is a new programming system for 3D virtual choreography, without having to spend on water and electricity in their tests.

The opening of the new show, coinciding with the Olympic Games in London and the Barcelona ‘92 Anniversary, started and closed with the song of Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballe, “Barcelona”. But you’ll even find a series of successful soundtracks like “The Lord of the Rings,” “Chariots of Fire” and “Highlander”, then brandnew songs or dances as “She does not mind” by Sean Paul “Ai si eu te pegu” by Michel Teló, “Girl gone Wild” by Madonna and “Life my live” by For East Movement.

The Magic Fountain show can be enjoyed until 30 September, from Thursday to Sunday from 9.00 p.m. to 11.30 p.m.. In autumn and winter the show will be on Friday and Saturday from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m.
Remember to bring your camera: the beautiful setting of the Palace at sunset, and the romantic show offered by the Magic Fountain is truly unforgettable.
